You are a Racist?
That is the challenge of a video True Colours
launched by youth@clc on the 2nd of May in Waterfront Hall,
Belfast
The video the first of its kind in Northern Ireland, produced
by young people for young people, challenges the complacency
of people in Northern Ireland that racism does not exist in
Northern Ireland.
The facts are frightening. People in Northern Ireland
are twice as likely to be racist as sectarian. In the Travelling
community children are 10 times more likely to die.
stated Punam Tohani
Punam continued Three out of every five of us would
not want an African Caribbean, Chinese or South Asian person
living in our communities. Two out of every three of us would
not want to work with a person from the Travelling community,
the facts are really frightening
This video is our challenge to government and the people
of Northern Ireland to recognize and reject racism in Northern
Ireland commented Mark Cosby, youth@clc
we want people to take up this challenge and
not stay quiet. Awareness is not enough, its how we
act to change it that counts, silence condones racism.
added Mark.
True Colours provides an educational tool to be used through
the medium of peer education. This resource will help to raise
awareness of racism in Northern Ireland whilst also stimulating
debate, amongst young people. The video will be used by the
Children's Law Centre and youth@clc in workshops and training
programmes.
